Retainer FAQs

Can I eat with my retainer on?

It's generally recommended to remove your retainer before eating to prevent damage and maintain hygiene and to brush your teeth before putting them back on

Are cleaning solutions better than brushing my retainer?

Both cleaning solutions and brushing are essential for maintaining a clean retainer. Brushing helps remove visible debris and plaque, while cleaning solutions, especially those specifically designed for retainers, can effectively kill bacteria and microbes that may not be removed by brushing alone. Combining both methods ensures thorough cleanliness and helps prevent odour and bacterial build-up on your retainer

How should I clean my retainer?

Research suggests cleaning your retainer with a toothbrush and mild soap or a specialized retainer cleaner. Avoid using hot water, as it can distort the retainer

How often should I see my orthodontist for retainer check-ups?

Initially, frequent check-ups are recommended (e.g., every few weeks), then less often as time progresses. Research supports regular monitoring

Can retainers fix a slight shift in my teeth?

Research suggests that if caught early, retainers can help correct minor tooth shifts and prevent further misalignment

This is applicable in scenarios where the original retainers haven’t been worn for a whilst, a small movement many have occurred and the original retainers are used to correct the slight movement

We suggest speaking to your dentist about your concern in movement before attempting to correct it

Can I get a retainer if I haven't had braces?

Yes, research suggests retainers can be used for various orthodontic purposes, not limited to post-braces maintenance
